Hashimoto
Chikanobu
[1838-1912]
Of
all the Hachi no ki print designs with which I
am familiar from atistss monographs, dealer galleries
and public collections viewable on the Internet, I was thrilled
to discover and eventually to acquire this particular version
by Chikanobu. His landmark series, entitled, Snow, Moon,
Flowers is in my opinion the finest Meiji period print
series ever produced. All together, the 3 images in our collection
representing The Potted Trees, describe 3 different
points along the arc of the story; Arrival, Sacrifice and
Destruction....a sort of beginning, middle and climax within
the narrative. This specific image presents the arrival of
the winter guest. |
